Give a man a fish and it will feed him for the day, but teach him to fish and he will eat for life.

Teach a man to fish, and he will enjoy more than just a good meal because fishing holds a number of healthy benefits. Grabbing your best fishing rods and reels and heading out for a day of fishing is one of the best things you can do. If you need an excuse to go fishing, just take a look at what this wonderful sport offers.

Strength

If you have ever read Hemingway, then you know that in The Old Man and the Sea, the protagonist battles the great marlin for three days. That dude must have been pretty strong. We doubt we can wrestle with a big bass for more than a few hours without giving up totally exhausted.

The point is the protagonist fished all the time, it was his job and it is also what made him so strong.

Fishing encourages men, women and children to train their bodies to have the strength needed to capture that trophy fish. Consider what you go through landing even small fish, you use your shoulders, back, arms, core and legs to reel it in.

When that day comes and you hook your big catch, your body will be prepared for the ensuing struggle.

Exercise

Fishing is great exercise, and not just when you are reeling one in. If you are like most fishermen, your favorite fishing spot isn’t right off the side of the road and probably takes a pretty good hike to get there.

And it you are a typical fisherman, you don’t spend too much time fishing the same spot, you like to move around and hit as many locations as possible. Basically, a day of fishing requires covering a lot of ground, with a full set of fishing gear to boot.

Stop for a moment and think about a typical day at the lake or river; how many times do you think you cast out and reel in? We guess that number will be in the hundreds. Talk about a good upper body workout.

Low-Impact

Hitting the gym and crushing weights is great and we hear all of the time how awesome CrossFit is, but those exercises do a number on your joints and other parts of your body. Basically, if you are going to do CrossFit, you will be in pain for at least a day, if not longer.

If you are into that, that’s great. But not all of us wish to cause our body pain for the sake of exercise. Fishing offers all of the benefits of a workout, but is low-impact, which saves wear and tear on those joints.

And if you can talk about CrossFit, we can talk about our fishing trip.

Relaxation

We spend our weekdays dealing with stressful situations at work, stressful situations on our commute and stressful situations with other family members sometimes. Basically, as humans, we deal with a lot of stress. Unfortunately, there is no way to avoid it.

If you want to unwind, relax and let your worries melt away, go fishing for the day. It is plain and simple, fishing calms you down. You are out in nature, enjoying the singing birds, cascading river and cool breeze with no computer to stare at. Your brain can focus on one simple task; to catch fish.

In addition, you get your daily dose of vitamin D when you spend the day in the sun fishing.

Dexterity

Fishing involves a lot of movement with the hands and fingers. As we age, these finer motor skills sometimes start to deteriorate, but fishing can help you keep them sharp for as long as possible.

When you fish, you use a lot of muscles that don’t normally get a whole lot of work. This helps keep them strong and in good working condition.

Family Bonding

Fishing is a skill that is passed on through the generations. You have fathers or grandfathers taking the kids to their favorite fishing spots and teaching them the basics of fishing, starting with hooking a worm.

You want to treat your spouse and kids to a fabulous day they will never forget? Pack up a picnic basket full of sandwiches and other great foods and take them fishing for the day.

They will be having so much fun, they will totally forget that you took them to a place with no cell phone signal.

Teaches Self-Reliance

In an age where everything is done with a voice command or a touch of a button, learning how to fish gives you a skill that might just save your life.

Fishing puts you out in the wild and calls for you to master a set of different skills. There is more to fishing than just placing a worm on a hook you know.

You Travel

We are betting that most fishermen have to drive a certain distance to get to their favorite fishing spot. Travel, even if it is just a few dozen miles, expands the mind and will make your life more fulfilling. In fact, fishermen are some of the most accomplished travelers. Face it, you would travel hundreds of miles if someone gave you the location of a great fishing spot.

As you can see, there are plenty of wonderful reasons you need to buy a fishing rod and reel combo and take the time to go fishing.
